Q. How do I find a specific photograph of a specific subject?
A. Each photograph stored in the online gallery has a full description embedded digitally into the image file. This description includes the common name and scientific name of each animal, plant or coral captured in the photograph, any interesting behaviour they may be exhibiting plus the location of the shoot. Each photograph also has an associated name (such as brain coral) plus a filename (such as crw_5342.jpeg).
You can search for any of the words appearing in the description, name or filename. Simply type your preferred search terms in the quicksearch box which is located underneath the menu bar at the top right hand corner of each gallery webpage and most other webpages.
For example
If you want a photograph of a frogfish - just type the word frogfish into the quicksearch box and press the return key on your keyboard. Any photographs containing a frogfish will be displayed in your browser. It's as easy as that.

Q. Can I get a high resolution version of the photo and permission to use it?
A. Yes you can.
Contact us by email for a quote based on your usage.
A license to use one of our images is a legal document (text) which describes the terms of use for an image, normally
including what scope of reproduction is allowed (eg. press, advertising, television) in which geographic area (eg Europe or worldwide) for what period (eg 12 months) and with an indication of what image resolutions (in terms of the total number of pixels) will be supplied. Copyright is not transferred or sold with any digital images supplied. Copyright of all the images on the site is and remains the property of Jason Pickering.

Q. How do I select a specific license for a single photo / multiple photos?
A. Thats easy
i. Select the thumbnails of all the photograph(s) you want to license for your specific use.
ii. Go to the drop down menus at the top of the page and select the license that best describes your use.
iii. Add the selected photos and the license to your lightbox.
iv. Each photo in your lightbox should have a copy of the license associated with it.
v. The total cost will be the price of the license x number of photos you have chosen with that license.

Q. How do I select different licenses for several photos?
A. That's just as easy as the previous example but remember you can only select one license at a time to add to your lightbox. So:-
i. Select the first license from the drop down menu and then each photograph you want to use in the way described in that license.
ii. Add all these photos and the first license to your lightbox.
iii. Select the second license and choose all the photos that you want to use with that license.
iv. Add all the second lot of photos and license to your lightbox.
v. If you look at your lightbox now - you will see that some photos have the first license and some have the second. Take a moment to check that each photo is associated with the correct license.
My use is not included in your online licenses
Please do not hesitate to request a specific quote for your intended use by email. We are more than happy to help our clients with their requirements. We plan to increase the number and therefore scope of the licenses offered online as our e-commerce software is further refined. We would appreciate your help in this matter and any thoughts you have about further reducing the administration re. image licensing would be gratefully received.

Q What is Editorial use?
A. Editorial use means publication in magazines, journals, newspapers or periodicals in conjunction with a story or alongside the regular written or journalistic content of the publication. Use with an advertisement within such a publication or for other advertising use is prohibited.
top of page

Q. What is Ad/Marcom use?
Ad/marcom use means for the use in any printed materials for the sole purpose of promoting or selling or marketing a product, service, individual or organisation for any reason including for commercial gain or for the solicitation of donations or gifts. Use in commercial products or retail products is prohibited unless specified in the license. To put it simply you are not granted rights to incorporate the image into a product that is sold under an ad/marcom license.
NOTE: Multiple standard licenses are required for multiple uses. For example, if you want to use the image in a brochure and also in a magazine ad - that is
two uses. If you want to use the image in identical ads in two different magazines that is also strictly speaking two uses requiring two licenses. From our point of view it is OK if you simply buy the required number of licenses for the corresponding number of uses straight off the website. However, if you want to use an image or images for an extensive marketing or ad campaign requiring multiple uses contact us for a quote for one license to cover all the uses in the whole campaign.

Q. Who owns the copyright for these photos?
A. Jason Pickering owns the copyright to all images and website content.
When you purchase a print or a digital copy of an image file through the site you are actually buying a license to use that copy of the image for a specified purpose for a specified length of time and you do not gain ownership of copyright of the image or photograph. You are in effect granted limited rights to use the image or photograph for a specified use and the copyright remains the property of Jason Pickering.
Prints come with a personal use license, similar to that which is granted whenever you buy a book, which allows you to view, display and use the print for your personal use as you might reasonably expect but which does not allow you to copy duplicate or modify the print or image in any way by any means or redistribute the print in any form other than how it was supplied to you. Full terms can be seen here.
Digital copies of images are sold on the basis of your proposed use of the image and during the checkout procedure you will be asked to select a license that most closely applies to that specified use. The price you pay for the copy of the image that will be sent to you is determined by the license that you select. The license will specify the extent to which you can modify reproduce publish and circulate the image. Other uses outside those specified by your license are strictly prohibited. In all cases, where any of Jason Pickering's photographs are reproduced, they must be accompanied by an acknowledgment line - copyright "insert year of publication" www.jaspnpickering.com All rights reserved
Digital images are despatched automatically by email upon completion of the secure transaction.

Q. Why do the flash galleries take so long to load?
A. The flash galleries contain large files and a lot of other data your browser needs to view the photos. The speed of download is directly related to the speed of your internet connection. It can take several minutes for a flash movie to load with a dial up modem (56K) or cable/dsl connection on a slow internet day! Full broadband (T1 -T3 or higher) connections are better.
We use broadband WiFi and sometimes its fast, sometimes its slow! Even the internet can have a bad hair day!
Remember, once you have downloaded the movie it will run at full speed and if browser caching is turned on things will download much quicker the 2nd time.

Q. Is there any way to speed to loading of flash galleries The best way to ensure fast download speeds is to get a fater internet connedction, however, there are a couple of things you can try. Try clicking the link then doing something else while the file loads! Sounds stupid but it works. Open another browser window to continue browsing (ctrl N or cmd N), make a cup of coffee or write an email - the options are endless. The file will eventually load. Alternatively, try reducing the size of your browser window (left click, hold and drag @ lower right corner of window) or even reducing the resolution of your screen display ( to 800x600). Some flash movies will choose to download smaller files at smaller browser sizes or screen resolutions.
Our flash Galleries can do this

top of page

Q. Is there another way to view your photos without using flash galleries? Yes there is. We try to offer at least 2 different ways to view our images online. Go back to the gallery page and look for the links to the indivudual collections. We have optimised the viewing experience for those with a slowish internet connection by by dividing the gallery into 7 underwater and 8 land photography collections. Smaller images and html based coding allow us to keep download times down to a minimum.
